The Surrogacy Process in Houston

The surrogacy process in Houston typically involves several key steps:

Step 1. Matching

The first step in a happy and healthy surrogacy process is creating the ideal match between the intended parents and the surrogate. At GHSC, we take various factors into account, including personalities, values, preferences, and expectations. Intended parents will be able to browse various surrogate profiles and choose any candidates they’re interested in. From there, introductory meetings can be set up to see if all parties feel good about the match.

Step 2. Legal and Medical Procedures

Once a match has been made, legal and medical processes can commence. The surrogate will undergo all physical and mental health necessary screenings to safeguard her well-being as well as that of the baby. This will include routine blood tests, ultrasounds, and more.

When it comes to legal matters, the intended parents will draft a surrogacy contract with their attorney. The surrogate will review this contract with her own attorney and note any questions they have or any changes they want to make. Once all parties are in agreement and the contract is signed, the surrogate can begin the initial fertility treatments in preparation for receiving an embryo.

Step 3. Pregnancy and Birth

The surrogate will take a blood test to see if she’s pregnant about two weeks after the embryo transfer. Once she’s been pregnant for eight weeks, she can begin weaning off fertility medications, and after 10 weeks, can stop seeing the fertility doctor and begin seeing an OB/GYN of her choice.

The surrogate will also have the opportunity to pick which hospital in which she’ll deliver the baby. During delivery, the intended parents are usually there to offer support and be part of the special day. Once the baby is born, the surrogate will have a little time with the baby before the intended parents take their new baby home with them.

Surrogacy in Houston FAQs

  • Texas surrogacy law determines who can be a surrogate, but surrogacy agencies will also set their own guidelines. To help ensure a healthy and rewarding journey, GSHC maintains strict requirements for surrogates in Houston and throughout the United States. Some of our key requirements include:

    • Age 21–38
    • Good health, BMI of 31 or less
    • Have had at least one child of your own
    • No more than three C-sections
    • No more than five previous pregnancies
    • Stable lifestyle and living situation
    • U.S. citizen with no felonies
    • No history of mental illness
    • Financially stable, no government assistance
  • We carefully evaluate every candidate who submits an application to GSHC to ensure they’re a good fit for undertaking the unique journey of surrogacy. We take various factors into account when helping to pair intended parents with surrogates. Overall personalities and temperaments, values, needs, and any unique preferences or expectations will all be considered, and intended parents can then peruse surrogate profiles to pick ones they think would be a good match. We’ll facilitate in-person meetings so all parties can be sure they’re aligned with the match before moving forward.

  • Surrogacy costs in Houston will vary from case to case. These costs will include legal fees, medical costs, agency fees, and surrogate compensation, which encompasses base pay as well as monthly allowances, reimbursement for insurance premiums, milestone payments, and more. All costs will be outlined in detail at the outset of the process, and we’ll work closely with you to create a plan that makes sense for you.

  • Under Texas law, both gestational surrogacy and traditional surrogacy are permitted. With gestational surrogacy, the surrogate does not use her own eggs and therefore has no genetic ties to the baby. With traditional surrogacy, a surrogate uses her own eggs and therefore is genetically related to the baby. Due to the emotional and legal complexities involved with traditional surrogacy, it is much less common and in most cases, is not recommended. At GSHC, we specialize only in gestational surrogacy.

  • In Houston and throughout the state of Texas, surrogate compensation is determined on a case-by-case basis and will depend upon the specific surrogacy contract at hand. These contracts will outline all requirements in detail, and both parties will ensure they’re in agreement before signing. In addition to base pay, other compensation will include monthly allowances, maternity clothing reimbursement, payment for certain medical procedures, insurance reimbursement, and more.
